Camino de Santiago
In 2019, a small student-led film crew flew to Spain to follow a group of pilgrims along the famed Camino de Santiago.
Along the 500-mile trek, the documentary explores the religious significance of the Camino and reflects on the pilgrims’ personal reasons for embarking on this journey.
Buen Camino.
Pre-Production
Storyboarding, shot list planning, equipment prep, and script outlining. We put together a plan of the story we wanted to tell, historical research, and key story characters. The only thing we didn’t account for was extra weight in Kinder bars we’d be adding to our luggage by the end of the project.
Production
Shooting B-roll, walk and talks, expert interviews, and drone footage. Right from wheels down in Spain we got to work getting all the shots we’d need for the final cut. We followed BYU’s pilgrims as they walked from town to town, interviewed hikers, got lost in the winding Spanish streets, and ate our weight in paella.
Post-Production
Logging footage, cutting shots together, editing interviews, and creating graphics. With hours of footage ready to be assembled, it felt like we were living in BYU’s editing bay by the end of the project. The final product naturally wove together heartwarming stories of pilgrims and the historical significance of the Camino—all while highlighting the stunning Spanish countryside and culture.
